class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are inert materials and why they are important<\/h3>\n\n<p>The term<strong>\u201caggregate materials<\/strong>\u201d refers to sands, gravels, crushed stone and other natural or recycled aggregates that do not undergo chemical transformations during their use. They are used in construction as main components for sub-bases, ballast and pavements. <\/p>\n\n<p>The importance of aggregates comes from their structural function: they must resist compression, provide drainage and contribute to the stability of the treated soil.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classification and particle size of aggregates<\/h3>\n\n<p>Inert materials can be classified according to various criteria, but two are particularly relevant: <strong>origin<\/strong> and <strong>grain size<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origin of aggregates:  <\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Natural: derived from crushed rock, sand or gravel extracted from quarries or river beds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycled: obtained from materials from demolition (concrete, bricks, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Artificial: produced by industrial processes, such as blast furnace slag.<br\/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aggregate particle size<\/h3>\n\n<p>Particle size indicates the size distribution of the particles that make up the aggregate, and is a key aspect of successful paving.<br\/>A <strong>balanced particle size curve<\/strong>, that is, a well-measured mixture of fine, medium and coarse particles:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improves compaction and bottom stability;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allows good drainage, preventing water stagnation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prevents erosion;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensures an even distribution of loads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Knowing and controlling grain size is essential to achieve a quality technical and aesthetic result, whether working with natural aggregates or recycled aggregates.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Local aggregates and recycled aggregates: a sustainable choice<\/h3>\n\n<p>Green Ways\u00ae promotes the use of <strong>local<\/strong> <strong>aggregates<\/strong> or <strong>recycled aggregates<\/strong> as an alternative to sourcing from distant quarries and processing centers.
